I strongly agree with the premise of the this article. I've thought about it once or twice.
Look at the plates that the rest of the world has - they are just purely for reading the plate number, not this nonsense we have over here. We need to put an end to these ridiculous 'novelty' plates too. I'd love for Jalopnik to write an article on this and maybe have our readers propose simpler, cleaner designs for each state. That would be so cool!

That plate is an exception, I love that plate (without the Sox, of course.)

I have this plate on my Porsche. My state allows year of manufacture plates if you're eligible for a historical vehicle plate. I like it better than the default Indiana plate.
Vs. this plate

I don't understand what you're asking for. How much cleaner and simpler do you want it?

If I went the green and gold route with my car, I'd be tempted to get some Packer plates even though I'm not into football. I'd get GOBEARS on it, just to piss people off.

That one is fine. It varies from state to state. I just think they should not be designed in such a way as to detract from reading the plate number easily - for safety. That means there should be a solid background behind the area where the numbers sit and the numbers should contrast from the background so you can read it.

I hate the comment "nice plates". I can't tell if they're car enthusiast or baseball enthusiast. The latter I could care less about.

There was probably some noted short stop or some shit who had the nickname "HOON" that they're reminiscing about.

Go back to whatever Euro country you came from or long for. This is America. We like our plates.

The Illinois police memorial plate is white with black lettering.

I agree with you 100%. Plates are to ID vehicles, not a bumper sticker.
There was a time I could ID a plate from 100 yards by the color alone. Now, I can't even tell what state they are from because of the multiple designs each state offers. Hell, with some frames I can't even read the state.
"Excuse me sir, did you get the plate number of the car that hit your car?
"Yes, it was SDE-2345"
"What state?"
"I don't know, but they really like horses."

I prefer more black then white but I like your thinking. Ideally I'd like the black and white Texas plates.
